9.8 - 9.15

This past week has been hectic, but really helpful in terms of getting a grasp on what I want to accomplish over the next few months in the studio. As Ive been preparing for my trip to Denmark, I tried to get a few pieces done so that I would have a jumping off place when I returned. I bisque fired to larger sculptures and had the chance to listen to their noise before I left on my trip. Like I hoped, they all sound distinct from one another. I also was able to knock out a few smaller vessels, and am happy in the direction they are heading, and the possibilities I will have with how they are finished.

My first two days in Denmark have been really wonderful. Yesterday I was able to check out a few ceramic exhibitions on the island of Bornholm. Today, along with several of the visiting artists, I was able to drive around the area with a wonderful couple. The husband is a geologist and his wife is local potter: Anne Mette Hjortshøj. Together they taught us about the regions natural resources and its production of ceramic material throughout Europe. After digging clay and bringing it back to her studio, Anna showed us how she uses the various clay bodies in her work.
