The past week has been more than I expected. I’m currently on a layover, mentally a bit fried, but I’m going to attempt to write something halfway coherent.
The second half of my trip was spent in Copenhagen, where I visited galleries and pottery studios. One of the most impactful things I saw will definitely influence my studio work this semester.
At the Statens Museum for Kunst, I saw an incredible exhibition called Against All Odds. It focused on European women artists from 1870–1910 who were excluded from the canon of painting due to patriarchal supremacy. What tied the show together was the contemporary work of digital artist Ix Shells, who created a data-driven, interactive installation using TouchDesigner. This blend of history and cutting-edge technology really inspired me.
It also helped me solve a problem I’ve been wrestling with since revising my semester project—specifically, how to transform sound into light. It seems like TouchDesigner, if I can get the hang of it, will allow me to transform the audio data I collect from my sculptures into a light installation. I’m planning to do some audio recordings this week so I can start experimenting with the application.
I’m ready to get to work. But maybe first, a nap.
