8.25 - 8.31

My first full week at IUS flew by. I spent some free time this week looking through old sketchbooks and journals to help me settle on some ideas. This weekend, I decided to stop "testing the waters" and jump straight in. I threw a batch of cups to test out some surface textures that I hope to use in my larger sculptural work this semester. My goal is to balance my time between creating these larger works and experimenting with different glazing and finishing techniques.

It feels really good to step out of my silo and start listening to the ideas of the other post-baccs. On some level, I had forgotten how hearing others talk about their work can inspire me and even help me solve dilemmas in my own process. It’s refreshing to see how diverse the work is within our cohort—I really feel like everyone is working in their own lane. I hope these differences will allow me to receive more objective critiques and insights into my work.

Looking ahead to this week, one thing I want to accomplish is making a more thorough calendar for myself with specific benchmarks. It’s strange to say, but I already feel like time is slipping by. I want to be ambitious yet practical about what I hope to achieve this year, and the only way I know how to do that is by breaking the rest of the year into smaller, more manageable tasks.
